The 14-year-olds became Britain’s youngest parents

In 2010, April Webster and Nathan Fishbourne became Britain’s youngest parents, a title that followed them for years. At just 13 years old, April became pregnant, and by the time their son Jamie was born, both had turned 14.

Their story made headlines, sparking a wave of debates, shock, and curiosity. Some viewed their situation with judgment, while others felt sympathy. But when the media eventually moved on, what happened to the family that had once captivated the public’s attention?

The Shocking Discovery

April and Nathan’s journey began when they met as classmates at St Cenydd School in Caerphilly, South Wales. What started as a teenage romance quickly turned serious when April discovered she was pregnant just a day before her 14th birthday.

April admitted that she hadn’t told her parents about her relationship with Nathan because she felt too embarrassed. When the news came out, it sent shockwaves through both families.

According to the couple, they had not used protection, with Nathan stating that after trying contraception once, he didn’t like it.

Nathan’s parents, Julie and Ron, were furious at first.

“I had a real go at him and told him he had been stupid. But we can’t undo what has happened and will now accept Jamie into our family. There’s no way we’ll turn our backs on him,” Nathan’s father, Ron, told The Sun at the time.

Despite the initial anger, both families eventually came together to support the young couple through their unexpected journey into parenthood. April’s mother, Maria, who was 36 years old at the time, stood by her daughter’s side.

“It was a big shock at first, but we let April make the decision on whether to go through with it,” she shared.

The Birth of Baby Jamie

Jamie was born in November 2010 via a dramatic cesarean section. He weighed 8 lbs 14 oz at birth but faced an early health challenge due to a malformed esophagus, which made feeding difficult. Fortunately, doctors were able to perform a successful operation, and after 11 days in the hospital, Jamie was deemed healthy and allowed to go home.

By the time British tabloids got hold of the story, Jamie was already four weeks old. At that point, he was living with April at her parents’ home, where her 17-year-old sister, Robyn, played a significant role in helping feed him bottles.

Nathan, on the other hand, lived a few miles away with his own parents.

Adjusting to Parenthood

Despite their young age and unconventional situation, April was determined to be the best mother she could be.

“Jamie wasn’t planned, but I’m going to be a great mom for him. He’s perfect, and I’m going to give him everything he ever wants,” she said at the time.

Nathan also had his own ideas about co-parenting.

“I’d love to have him at weekends – and April can have him five days during the week,” he suggested.

However, uncertainty loomed over their relationship.

“We’re having a cooling-off period,” April admitted in 2010, adding that she wasn’t sure if they would stay together.

Moving On from Young Love

As many predicted, April and Nathan eventually parted ways. By 2014, April confirmed that they had broken up three years earlier and were no longer in contact.

“I broke up with Nathan about three years ago; we’re not really in contact,” she shared. “I don’t really want to be in contact with him. When I first had Jamie, I hoped we might stay together. There are no regrets, though.”

April had originally planned to continue her education, but she never took her GCSEs, the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma.

“I’m not in school or working. I’m just looking after Jamie, and everything is going amazingly with him,” she said.

Luckily, April’s family remained incredibly supportive, ensuring she had help raising Jamie.

“My mom and sister love having Jamie in the house. He’s fun. He goes to school in the mornings, which gives me time to chill out. I might go to college and take some exams when Jamie is older. I’m not planning on having another baby soon, though,” she added.

Where Are They Now?

Fast forward to today, and April’s life has completely transformed. She is now a proud mother of three, raising Jamie alongside her other children, Rowan David and Ava Lianne. She has also found love again and is in a happy relationship with Jake Jones.

April, now 28 years old, goes by the name April Lianna and frequently shares updates about her life on social media. She appears to be thriving, enjoying motherhood, and embracing her new chapter.

Nathan’s life has also taken a positive turn. In February 2023, he got engaged to his partner, Samantha, and has since built his own family, raising several children.

Overcoming Challenges and Moving Forward

Teen pregnancy brings immense challenges, from societal judgment to the pressures of raising a child at such a young age. However, April and Nathan have both managed to build fulfilling lives despite the odds.

Jamie, now a teenager himself, has grown up with two loving parents, even though they are no longer together. It’s heartwarming to see that both April and Nathan have remained involved in his life, proving that with support and determination, young parents can create positive futures.

A Story of Resilience

April and Nathan’s journey is a reminder that teen parents face unique struggles, but they also have the ability to create meaningful, successful lives.

It’s inspiring to see how April has flourished as a mother, and it’s reassuring to know that Nathan has also found happiness.

Their story, once a headline sensation, is now one of growth, resilience, and transformation.

We wish them and their families all the best in the future!
